Andy's sponsored reverse triathlon on April Fool's Day

Created by Andy 1st April 2020 This event has closed

Story

I have MND and a consequence of that is that my hands don't work properly and walking has come to be very hard work if I try and walk more then 200 yds. It therefore might seem crazy for me to want to undertake a sponsored walk to raise money for MNDA. I'm doing this because MNDA’s income from money-raising will be drastically reduced as a consequence of the coronavirus. I hope you will feel able to sponsor me to try and walk 1000 steps. I'm aiming to do this at 8.00am on April Fool’s Day (when else would be more appropriate?) and will be accompanied by my devoted wife Ann who will also be carrying a folding chair in case I need to sit down for a rest halfway round. So please think carefully about this request and I hope you will feel able to sponsor me.

Updates

my 15 minutes of fame

24th April 2020
On the day of my Triathlon I was invited by Coventry and Warwickshire BBC Radio to appear on their breakfast show and drive time show to talk about my April fool event. Also MND Association asked us to video the event; we sent them our videos and they compiled a short video which they posted on social media. Then on Good Friday I was asked to speak on Radio 2's At The Foot Of The Cross programme. I've been able to upload the MND Association video and the Radio 2 clip to my fightback homepage, just scroll down to the bottom and you'll see them.

All change

8th April 2020
Due to you know what, I have been advised by MNDA that I should not do my walk on public roads du to my need to self-isolate. I have therefore decided to do a reverse Triathlon: I will start on my feet by walking (I can’t run any more) 500 steps by going around my garden around 7 times; I will sit down for 5 minutes then take to the saddle ……. on my (exercise) bike and cycle 1km (which will leave me weak at the knees); after another rest I will take to the water……… by taking a shower! Final bit of news (to some of you anyway) is that on Good Friday BBC Radio 2’s programme At The Foot Of The Cross to be broadcast at 7pm will include a slot of yours truly talking about my faith and having MND. I recorded this a few weeks ago. It will be available on the BBC sounds app afterwards.

I DID IT

3rd April 2020
It took me about an hour with breaks for rest and the exercise bike did leave me weak at the knees! But i was relieved to get to the shower. My good friend Trevor Langley has connections at BBC Coventry and Warwickshire radio so I was interviewed live on the breakfast show and again on the drive time show. I’m so grateful to all those who have made such generous sponsorship donations and the MND Association has asked me to emphasise their gratitude too. Every penny is needed and well used by them so please donate if you can.
